Branding is a vital part of your business and greatly effects many aspects of it. If you’re wanting to nail down your business’ branding yourself, here are the top 6 branding mistakes I commonly see business owners make that you should avoid…
1. Too focused on selling a product/service instead of emotions and benefits it brings-
Humans are emotional creatures who crave authenticity and connection. People, especially women, don’t have the urge to buy a product or service because of the list of things it includes or the dry description of it. They buy it because of HOW it is presented to them. They actually WANT to purchase it because of how it makes them feel, the emotions that are attached to it, the future they can see in it, etc. So don’t make the selling point of your offer the product itself. Make it the positive emotion, benefits, and end-goals. If you’d like to read more about this, check out my blog post about Branding tip: Don’t Sell A Product, Sell An Emotion.
2. Color palette isn’t cohesive to brand message and values-
You want the entire vibe of your brand to make sense for what you’re offering and how you want people to feel about your business. Your brand should accurately represent what your business is, does, provides, and stands for- therefore attracting the right people(your ideal clients/target market). An anxiety coach who’s ideal client is someone who wants to learn to control their anxiety and bring inner peace into their life isn’t going to have a very vibrant, busy, high-energy brand. They would have a calm, soft, and friendly brand, because that’s what their ideal client is looking for. So when a business has branding that’s unauthentic, all that means is that their image, vibe, brand personality, color palette, etc doesn’t accurately tell their audience what they’re all about and therefore doesn’t attract the right people.
3. Inconsistency is your visuals/design-
All your colors, fonts, and imagery within your graphics should be cohesive and consistent.
4. Doing the same thing as everyone else in your market-
Make sure your brand and business are as special and rare as you are. Let your uniqueness shine through and attract the perfect audience, who see the real you and fall in love. I see this so much and have even fallen victim to it myself! We see someone else doing what we want to do and being successful doing it, and want to be just like them so we end up “copying” them in a way(whether consciously or subconsciously). Most of the time we really don’t mean to but we forget that the reason why THEY are successful is because they, more often than not, did things DIFFERENTLY. They were the first one to show up how they did and be the answer to their specific audience. So make sure not to fall in the trap of “oh if I do things just like them, I’ll be exactly where they are in no time!” It’s simply not true and ends up leaving you unaligned and fading into the background. You want to stand out in your market not blend right in!
5. Changes brand every other month-
As we all know consistency is KEY! This is why it’s so important to really NAIL down your branding so that you can continue to feel aligned to it for long periods of time, and not keep changing it up on your audience. If your audience notices that you keep changing, it makes them feel like you’re wishy-washy and they’re less likely to trust you.
6. Brand isn’t catered to your ideal audience-
Similarly to tip 2, just as your brand needs to align with your values, it also needs to align with your audience’s. they are the people you’re trying to catch the attention of so it is crucial to create your brand to be attractive and aligned with them!
